Food and Drink

One of the very best things you can do in life is eat in Italy. Just walking around Frascati, you will be overwhelmed with the number of great little hole-in-the-wall type places where the food is cheap and tastes otherworldly.

The following recommendations come courtesy of us and our wedding planner.

Ristoranti (Restaurants)

L’asino D’oro: Where the locals choose to dine out and drink wonderful wines.

Via Verdi, 8 Grottaferrata Tel. +39 (06) 941-0322 asinodorovineria@yahoo.it

Pizzaria Ovosodo: Quiet simply the best pizza in Frascati!

Via Antico, 1 - 00044 Frascati Tel. +39 (06) 941-6131

Pinocchio: This is a darling little restaurant located in the centre of Frascati specialising in traditional Roman cuisine. This restaurant was a highlight for us on both of our visits to Frascati. The menu has a huge selection of authentic Italian food which you can enjoy in the quirky designed restaurant or outside on the terrace soaking up the roman atmosphere. The Pizzas there are amazing!!

Piazza del Mercato, 21 - 00044 Frascati Tel. +39 (06) 941-7883

Deep fryed olives stuffed with the famous italian porecetta. Belisiomo!!!

Al Fico: This historic coaching inn, dating to the 16th century, is situated on an old Roman road a couple of miles outside Frascati. It has a charming garden shaded by the old fig tree that gave the place its name. The menu offers a wide choice of local dishes, such as gnocchi with cheese and truffles.

Via Anagnina 257, Grottaferrata Tel. +39 (06) 945-9261

La Vecchia Frasca: Local dishes, brilliant antipasta, main dishes are well prepared and we particularly liked their homemade lemonchello. Espresso with grappa to finish the meal. We had a great experience in La Vecchia Frasca, situated in the middle of Frascati. Starters are various and delicious, from beans, to vegetables, great salumi and tartufo chickpeas, romans trippa and more and more. We have also tasted very good pasta, steak and vegetables garnish. House wine was good. You can breath an informal romans atmosphere. We would go back for the antipasta alone!

In one word: recommended

Complimentary homemade LemonChello

Il Grottino: We found Il Grottino after stolling around for a while and chose it because of the atmosphere and the view! Great choice! The view from their terrace was fantastic! The food was equally as good.
Via Regina Margherita, 41/43, 00044 Frascati, Italy 06 9416873

Birrerie (Beer and wine)

Like places to eat, there are a lot of local bars and pubs around Frascati.

‘Ma che ce siete venuti a fa’: Comes recommended from great local brewer, Lorenzo de Sanctis and his wife to be, Luisa.

Via di Benedetta, 25 Trastevere, Roma

Casal Pilozzo: A beautiful old winery owned by a local family with the opportunity to sample award winning wine and tour the vineyard (left) and wine cellars.

Italo and his father-in-law are very fond of visitors and will more than likely encourage you to have a drink, even before noon.

Via Pilozzo 17, Monte Porzio Catone Tel. +39 (06) 944-9113

Enoteca Molinari: A great place to buy wine as gifts or for the park bench.

Via cernaia, 8 Frascati

Gelaterie (Ice Cream)

Milletti: Specialising in amazing varieties of ice cream made with nuts called ‘pinolata’.

Via Principe Amedeo, Frascati

Tris: Our favourite gelateria in the Rome region – though arguments do rage over the numero uno even within families – they specialise in ice cream with fruit. The Gratton family live off the ‘pistachio’.

Piazza San Pietro, Frascati

Brega-Bar Belvedere: Ice cream made in a very creamy fashion – forget the diet while you’re here and sample the ‘nocciola’ and ‘nutella’

Piazza Roma, Frascati

Forni (Informal but irresistible snacking, order at the counter)

One thing you should look out for – and unique to Frascati – is La Pupazza di Frascati or ‘Miss Frascati.’ She is a traditional biscuit made from honey, flour and water and decorates many shop windows in the town centre. She is a known as the local goddess of abundance; two of her breasts give milk and the third gives wine. Enjoy!

Forno dell’olmo: For great pizza, particularly good for ‘pizza bianca’ (a type of bread topped with olive oil, salt and, occasionally, rosemary sprigs)

Via dell’Olmo, Frascati

Ceralli: For ‘ciambelle’, a donut shaped biscuit great for dunking in red wine.

Piazza Bambocci, Frascati

Purificato: For freshly baked pastries and other sweet treats

Piazza del mercato, Frascati
